SL pioneer Carmen Hermosillo, aka Humdog, warned about the dangers of mistaking the virtual for the real in her essay “Pandora’s Vox Redux”. She posited that Baudrillard was correct, and that people prefer the easily idealized simulacrum to the real, and that this mistake can lead to dangerous consequences in the real world.

These compositions are the warped and abstracted result of current consumer 3D scanning technology and the limitations therein. Machines are only in their infancy in being able to parse and understand space in the way that humans can. Machines are really good at dividing and segmenting, but not so great at understanding how the parts relate to the whole. Muir once said (to paraphrase) pull on something in nature, and you’ll find that its attached to everything else.

These artifacts represent the limitations of the machine algorithms as well as their infancy in parsing space. They are also imbued with the bias toward scientific reasoning, which mostly good can be detrimental in its bias toward categorization, segmentation, isolation, etc.
